The news, first reported by Bloomberg and The Wall Street Journal, sent Baidu's stock price rising on Monday to reach its highest point since September. A spokesperson for Baidu declined to comment on the reports. But it wouldn't be surprising that Baidu, which bills itself as the pioneer in China's artificial intelligence field, is stepping up to build the Chinese equivalent of today's most powerful chatbot. The question is how big a difference the tool can make, and where its limitations lie.

Baidu Inc. is planning to roll out an artificial intelligence chatbot service similar to OpenAI's ChatGPT, according to a person familiar with the matter, potentially China's most prominent entry in a race touched off by the tech phenomenon. China's largest search engine company plans to debut a ChatGPT-style application in March, initially embedding it into its main search services, said the person, asking to remain unidentified discussing private information. The tool, whose name hasn't been decided, will allow users to get conversation-style search results much like OpenAI's popular platform.

SINGAPORE--Activision Blizzard Inc. said that NetEase Inc., its longtime partner in China, has refused its offer to extend a licensing partnership and that it is in talks with several videogame companies to find a new partner in the country. Blizzard Entertainment Inc., an Activision subsidiary, said Tuesday that it proposed to NetEase a six-month extension to the partnership that is set to expire next week. The licensing partnership has brought Blizzard's globally popular videogames such as "World of Warcraft," "Diablo III" and "Overwatch" to the Chinese market through NetEase.
